| | | The department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics started in the year 1980. It started functioning with a single chair. From it’s inception it has evolved and transformed itself into a world class teaching center and providing yeoman service to the patients not only from Davangere but also from far off places in Karnataka and the neighboring states.
In its infancy, due to the infrastructure constraints the type of orthodontic treatment delivered was through removable orthodontic appliances. Gradually with support and assistance from the management and with the opening of free trade by the Government of India, the department has evolved itself. |
| | | | The department has world class infrastructure and has evolved into a teaching and a research center par excellence. It is one of the best departments in India providing post- graduate education in the specialty of Orthodontics.

The file section is this department’s forte, with more than 2000 fully documented patient records. The entire records are in digital format for easy access and is updated periodically. It provides a mammoth of information for research purposes. The department follows a protocol for on going and post treatment cases. Most post treatment patients report to the department annually and this provides us to review the results which we achieved and also where we need to improve.
The department clinics are one of the largest in India. It is WiFi enabled with digital patient database. Treatments provided range from removable orthodontic appliances to complex orthognathic surgeries. There is a dedicated cephalometric tracing room for the PG students with ergonomically designed tracing board. To inculcate the humane aspects of the medical profession all cleft lip/palate cases are treated free in this department.
The department is an examination centre for conducting Diplomate of National Board Examination approved by the Govt. of India.

| The audiovisual section provides state of the art support facilities for interactive CDE programmes. Apart from LCD projectors and audiovisual equipments this section has a visualizer which provides for live on the screen demonstrations during student interactive sessions.
The department store has a wide range of high quality orthodontic materials and product catalogues of reputed orthodontic companies. In phrase the department stores is equipped with “The Latest and the Best in Orthodontics”.
The computer work station has a broadband connection for high speed internet access, 5 computers, high resolution x-ray scanner, Laser printers and the room is completely air-conditioned. A computer programmer is appointed exclusively to this work station. | | | The photography section is another hallmark of the department. It has progressed from the manual operating systems to the digital ones, the account of which is projected as a photography museum in the department. Presently photographs of patients are taken and stored in digital format. The camera used is CANON EOS Digital with macro lenses.
Sterilization of instruments used to work on patients, is given utmost importance. Autoclaves, ultrasonic cleaners and a distill water plant.
The dry & wet labs are equipped with state of the art equipments like hydroflame soldering units, high vacuum Essix moulding machine, biostar pressure moulding machine, NiTi wire bending arch mate machine, plaster dispenser, model trimmer, vibrator for removing the air bubbles, high speed digital micro motors, pressure pot, sand blasting machine, electropolisher.
The facilities in the seminar room is unique. The seating arrangement is peculiar with the table in a horse shoe shape with chairs and dedicated microphone for the audience to speak. It has one of the best LCD projector which projects the presentations from the computer on to the screen.
In the year 2007 the department has revised the curriculum. Some of the wire bending exercises were deleted and some additions were made to keep updated to the latest trends. The additions to the curriculum were surgical prediction, mock surgery, Arnett soft tissue analysis. Some enrichment courses were implemented like bonding of PEA brackets on models, tracing superimpositions on cephalogram. The topics taught beyond syllabus are patriotism & ethics. The department maintains links to academic associations, hospitals, laboratories and other institutions to upgrade itself. The engineering college mechanical engineering lab and the textile department lab are utilized for conducting various experiments. The universities as educational base, send students from the country and abroad as student exchange programmes. The staff members in the department are teaching faculty, clinical assistants and non teaching faculty which come to strength of 20 members.
